My Experience

City of Athens

August 2025 - Present

Human Resources Intern

I currently serve as a Human Resources Intern for the City of Athens, where I support HR operations for more than 400 municipal employees across departments including Police, Fire, Public Works, Utilities, Recreation, and Administration. Working within a public-sector environment has provided me with firsthand exposure to the complexities of government HR, including union and non-union workforce considerations, regulatory compliance requirements, and cross-departmental coordination.

One of my primary projects has been leading the digitization and reorganization of over 400 confidential personnel files. This initiative strengthened document retention compliance, improved accessibility of records, and modernized long-standing filing systems. Through this work, I developed a deeper understanding of records management standards, confidentiality protocols, and the operational importance of accurate employee documentation.

In addition to records management, I assist with onboarding coordination, employee documentation processing, benefits administration support, and HRIS management using BambooHR. I have created over 200 employee identification badges and contributed to updating onboarding materials to ensure consistency and professionalism in the new hire experience. I also collaborate closely with the Auditor’s Office to support payroll accuracy and maintain alignment between HR records and compensation data.

Beyond administrative tasks, this role has allowed me to observe and analyze broader structural considerations within public-sector HR, including departmental responsibility clarification, process standardization, and communication efficiency between offices. Exposure to these operational challenges has strengthened my problem-solving abilities and reinforced the importance of clear systems, defined accountability, and strategic HR infrastructure.

As I continue in this role, I am focused on expanding my understanding of policy application, compliance frameworks, and process improvement within municipal government. This experience has solidified my interest in building a career in strategic human capital management, where I can align people practices with organizational effectiveness and long-term sustainability.
