University Hearing Board Member

As a member of the Ohio University Hearing Board, I serve on a panel responsible for reviewing and adjudicating alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct. This role is centered on fairness, accountability, and upholding community standards while ensuring that all students are treated with dignity and impartiality. My responsibilities include reviewing case materials, listening to testimonies, asking clarifying questions, and collaborating with fellow board members to reach fair and evidence-based decisions.

Each hearing is guided by the preponderance of the evidence standard—determining whether it is more likely than not that a policy violation occurred. This principle is emphasized in every meeting, reminding us of the importance of objectivity, consistency, and critical thinking in the decision-making process. Serving in this role has strengthened my ability to analyze complex information, evaluate credibility, and apply policy with fairness and empathy.

Participation on the Hearing Board also requires a strong sense of confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical judgment. I have gained valuable experience handling sensitive situations, engaging in thoughtful discussions about conduct and accountability, and balancing compassion with the responsibility to uphold university policy.

Through this experience, I have developed a deeper appreciation for how fairness, due process, and restorative practices contribute to a safe and inclusive campus environment. Being part of the Hearing Board has allowed me to apply ethical reasoning in real-world contexts and reaffirmed my commitment to promoting respect and integrity within the university community.
